Healing and Preventing Diseases with Ayurveda

Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to health, focusing on both prevention and treatment by addressing the root cause of disease rather than just its symptoms. By understanding how imbalances develop in the body over time, Ayurveda can detect and correct early signs of disease before they fully manifest. This makes it a powerful system for long-term health and prevention.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing Ayurvedic therapy in which warm herbal oil, medicated buttermilk, milk, or decoctions are gently poured in a continuous stream over the forehead for 30–45 minutes. Known as one of the best treatments for stress relief, it is usually done in a series of 3–7 sessions. Shirodhara is highly effective for calming the nervous system and is beneficial for conditions such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, mental tension, headaches, migraines, and certain psychosomatic disorders like psoriasis.

Udvartanam (Powder Massage)

Udvartanam is a traditional Ayurvedic powder massage that uses herbal powders to exfoliate, stimulate circulation, and eliminate toxins. Often followed by a full-body steam bath, it helps detoxify the system, improve complexion, and support weight management. Widely known as the Ayurvedic weight-loss massage, Udvartanam is especially effective for reducing stubborn fat, cellulite, and heaviness in the body. For best results, a course of 1–3 weeks of treatment is recommended.

Svedanam (Steam Therapy)

Svedanam is an Ayurvedic steam therapy that uses herbal steam to induce sweating and release toxins from the body. This traditional Ayurvedic steam bath can be taken on its own or alongside other Panchakarma therapies to enhance their effect. It relaxes the muscles, opens the body’s channels, improves blood circulation, stimulates metabolism, and supports natural detoxification. Svedanam is also helpful for relieving stiffness, body pain, and respiratory congestion.

Pinda Sveda (Bolus Massage)

Pinda Sveda is a therapeutic Ayurvedic massage using warm boluses filled with herbs, grains, or medicated ingredients tailored to the patient’s condition. The heat and herbal properties penetrate deeply to relieve stiffness, nourish tissues, and reduce chronic pain. This bolus massage is particularly effective for arthritis, joint pain, muscle stiffness, and neuromuscular disorders. For lasting relief, a course of 3–7 days or longer is recommended.

Bahya Vasti (External Dough Dam) Oil Soaking Therapy by Ayuskama Ayurveda

Bahya Vasti (External Dough Dam)

Bahya Vasti, is a localized Ayurvedic oil treatment where a ring of dough is placed on a specific area of the body and filled with warm medicated oil. Depending on placement, it is called Janu Vasti (knees), Kati Vasti (lower back), Greeva Vasti (neck), Uro Vasti (chest), Shiro Vasti (head), or Netra Vasti/Akshitarpan (eyes). This therapy is widely used in Ayurveda for back pain, arthritis, knee pain, spinal disorders, and neurological issues, as it nourishes tissues, reduces stiffness, and slows degeneration.

Akshitarpan (Netra Vasti)

Akshitarpan, also known as Netra Vasti, is a deeply rejuvenating Ayurvedic eye treatment where medicated ghee is gently retained around the eyes. This therapy nourishes and strengthens vision, relieves dryness, and supports conditions such as computer eye strain, chronic headaches, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and macular degeneration. Often recommended for natural eyesight improvement and prevention of degenerative eye disorders, a course of at least seven sessions is usually advised.

Nasyam (Ayurvedic Nasal Therapy)

Nasyam is a powerful cleansing treatment in Ayurveda, where medicated oils or herbal extracts are gently administered through the nostrils. This therapy helps clear mucus and toxins from the sinuses, improves breathing, and nourishes the nerves of the head. Nasyam is highly effective for chronic sinusitis, nasal allergies, migraines, frequent headaches, and other vata–kapha disorders.  It is widely recommended in Ayurveda for natural relief from respiratory issues, stress, and head- and neck-related conditions.

Agnikarma (Ayurvedic Heat Therapy)

Agnikarma is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment that uses a nine-metal instrument to apply controlled heat to targeted areas of the body. This gentle yet precise technique stimulates circulation, reduces chronic pain and inflammation, and supports natural healing. Agnikarma is especially effective for pain management in conditions such as heel pain, arthritis, and sciatica. It is also safely used in Ayurveda for the removal of warts and moles.

Alabu (Cupping)

Alabu, or Ayurvedic cupping therapy, uses suction cups to create a vacuum on the skin, stimulating circulation and releasing stagnant blood. This helps reduce pain, stiffness, and inflammation, making it beneficial for arthritis, sports injuries, and chronic muscle tension.

Cupping may be performed dry or combined with bloodletting (raktamokshana) for deeper detoxification. Multiple sessions are often recommended for lasting results.
